Leaving Whistler

In the blink of an eye two and half months at Whistler have passed. Remarkably I’m still in one piece and feeling strong. My bike has not been so lucky. I’m not even taking it home. I donated what was still useable but there wasn’t much left. Riding the park understandably accelerated the wear on my bike if I think about. Riding back in Michigan maybe 5 or 10 minutes of every ride would be riding fast over rough terrain on some short decent.  In the bike park it might be hours worth. With everything bouncing and slapping around, high speeds and countless moments of forcing the bike to take hard hits nothing can last very long.

Strava tells me I managed 117 rides while in Whistler (almost 2 per day) and that I traveled 1573 miles (2531km) downhill. I dropped 397,605 feet (121,190km) in elevation too. I pedaled up very little of that as a month in my drive train rattled off and I changed my bike over to single speed to become a pure park rat. I took only a day or two off the bike in my 2.5 months and feel like I rode about as much as I could want to.

The next phase of my traveling starts in a few days. It is strange to me to not have a home to go back to or a car to jump into but overall I’m still feeling really good about being on this adventure. Surprisingly to me, as I have been pretty free with my money, it hasn’t been quite as expensive as I thought to live on the road. Sure there is no house payment, car payment, car insurance or electricity bill to pay but there’s also the countless other stuff I’d normally spend money on. No late night online purchase of a fancy non-stick pan or a new lamp that I felt like I needed for drawing. I reckon I am spending about the same, and maybe a little less than I was living at home even though I am staying in hotels or airBNBs every night.
